The work of Loewen on religion ranges from general discussions on the relationship between science and religion as well as reason as well as faith (2008 between 2008 and 2012) as well as scholarly research into the hermeneutic aspects of religious experiences, and research on William James, Heidegger, Weber and Durkheim (2009). His books that are popular are characterized by a distinct Durkheimian style. The book What’s God? Loewen argues that it’s the combination of our human aspiration to transcend what our mortal limitations, with the fear of the same mortality which gives us the subjective desire for a life of faith. The need for religion in the culture is rooted in the need for human socialization. The author, in On the Afterlife, he provides a fresh historical and comparative theory of beliefs regarding the purpose and significance of the afterlife, which puts into practice his anthropological background. He suggests that all societies can be classified by one of five different patterns which are either believing that the soul is not valued by the world, or it’s assessed, it is rated and never returns, or it is unvalued and doesn’t return. The concept of noness is a unique contemporary understanding, but Loewen believes that it will not hamper our moral endeavors when we are living to think that death comes to a sudden and complete end. He concludes that all of these five concepts is designed to help us remember the similar human condition which he believes historically is offering each one of us as a blessing and a challenge. The concept of phenomemnemonics which is studying objects which we can recall different experiences, has particular significance to the connections between the religious and biographical traditions.

Gregory Victor Loewen (born 1966) is a social philosopher who is rooted in the tradition of hermeneutics and the study of phenomenology. He is the author of more than two dozen books He has the distinction of being (according him) “the most prolific scholar of Generation X”, and is an age-relative among several modern period academic writers who have created an impressive amount of work in the early stages of their careers. They include Herder, de Bono, Spir, Joad, Aguilera and Schelling.

With Hermeneutic Pedagogy, Loewen “aims to expound the educational process in the hermeneutical tradition, but is also an essay on the educational model the author calls the hermeneutical circle of experiential pedagogy. Loewen elaborates a conception of learning which considers the dynamic relations between the conservative, the technical and the moral dimensions of education.” The book describes the relationship between hexis, also known as the praxis or custom of theoretical application, and also phronesis the Aristotelian knowledge of practical wisdom that the critical interpretation learning process ultimately aims. “Custom is only a first step in the dialectical process of learning. Not only do we forget and alter what we are taught, but also come to contest. Customs are reinterpreted, theory adjusted to suit reality, the social reality of tradition is reshaped, and the episteme of the serious business of constructing knowledge takes on its new historical task.” The second stage of the learning process is applied theory. Its purpose is to increase knowledge and to apply it for the advancement of knowledge. Institutions, according to Loewen, have become the means by the process of bringing a paradigm into existence. In the same way that’repetition’ is the primary word used to describe the hexis, and “extension” for practice Learning is embodied in phronesis, which is the term used to describe practical knowledge. “While custom presents a ready-made reality for our consumption and oblation, and theory presents to us the revolution of consciousness that overturns that world, practical wisdom shines upon the light of worldliness, the way in which the world worlds itself.” Through phronesis, the hermeneutical cycle of experiential pedagogy as Loewen describes it, is closed and achieves its own goals. It illuminates the other two fundamental dimensions, and puts the two together and exposes the capabilities they fail to recognize, yet are fundamental to human being as a learner. Phronesis refers to the profound learning experience that an individual experiences, an experience that can’t be learned.” The Loewen’s (2003 2004 and 2012) research on the processes of education reveal the implicit expectations and the latent purposes of discourses and institutions and draw inspiration from the groundbreaking work that were the work of Bourdieu as well as Passeron. However, Loewen takes criticism that is inherent in dialectics by attempting to reconstruct learning through the dialog of hermeneutics.
