He has previously worked for Network Ten, the Nine Network and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) as a freelance commentator/reporter/presenter, mainly covering motor racing.
In 2015 it was announced that the V8 Supercars television rights moved to a shared broadcast with Fox Sports and Network Ten. The two broadcasts shared a similar commentary team, created through V8 Supercars Media and headed by Rust and Neil Crompton. Rust has also been hosting Fox Sports’ new V8 Supercars panel show ”Inside Supercars Inside Supercars”. He hosts the coverage for several international networks and in 2016 he made a returning to reporting from pits during the races. He is currently commentating on his coverage of the Super2 Series, with four times Bathurst 1000 winner Greg Murphy.

Following the cutting of his tooth in the SBS motorsports show Speedweek, Rust was drafted into Channel 9’s commentator crew for Channel 9’s final Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Eastern Creek Raceway in 1996. He was the official commentator for the support races together with the 1980 Formula One World Champion Alan Jones.

Despite being invited to join Seven Network in 2007, Seven Network in 2007, Rust was a loyal customer of Ten to host Ten’s MotoGP as well as F1 broadcasts as well as its long-running motorsport magazine show RPM.
