Ritchie performed well again in the 1981-82 campaign with his scores of 55, 71 and 72 against West Indies, then the most successful squad in all of the globe. Ritchie scored 126 and 103 for South Australia saw him discussed once more as a potential test player.

Ritchie undertook a fitness campaign over the winter and lost several kilos. He began the 1983–84 summer brilliantly scoring 196 for Queensland against the touring Pakistan side. He followed this with four half centuries, and at one stage his first class run tally for the season was 451 at an average of 112. He then scored centuries against Victoria and NSW.

Ritchie was a player for Queensland between the years 1980 between 1980 and 1992. He scored 10,170 run in his first cricket season with an average 44.21 comprising 54 fifties and 24 centuries. In 2000, he was named one of the top seven Sheffield Shield run scorers in Queensland history, having scored more than 6000 runs for the state.
