Gregory Vincent McElroy, Jr. (born on May 10, 1988) is an American football commentator, and former quarterback of the National Football League (NFL). McElroy was drafted to the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL) in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft following his in college soccer at Alabama. In his time at high school, McElroy won several awards like receiving the title of the EA Sports All-American and winning the Texas 5A State Championship for Southlake Carroll. McElroy was the primary quarterback on the Crimson Tide football team. As an undergraduate, he led his team Crimson Tide to an undefeated 14-0 record that was highlighted by the 2010 SEC Championship and BCS National Championship.

In 2008, McElroy again saw limited activity. McElroy made just six appearances in games throughout in the season’s regular seasons. McElroy completed his first pass for the year in the 41-7 victory against Western Kentucky, completing 4-of-6 passes for 61 yards. In the next game against Arkansas, McElroy threw his first interception of his career in the fourth quarter which Razorback rookie cornerback Ramon Broadway returned to the Alabama 34-yard line. The first touchdown pass of the season occurred in an impressive 36-0 victory over state the rival Auburn during an annual Iron Bowl. His 34-yard pass for redshirt junior Marquis Maze was the final score of the game.

With a slow start, in which McElroy completed just two of his first ten passes including an interception, the Tide were down 16–17 at halftime. However, he led the Crimson Tide to 18 points in the final quarter, including a 22-yard touchdown pass to running back Mark Ingram, as Alabama downed the Hokies 34–24. For their performances, both he and Ingram shared the SEC Offensive Player of the Week award. The following week, McElroy completed 14 consecutive passes—a school record—en route to a 40–14 win over Florida International. He followed up the performance as he set another school record for passing efficiency in a single game, as he completed 13-of-15 passes (86.7%) in a 53–7 rout of North Texas.

In September 2010, McElroy was named the 20th-smartest athlete in sports by Sporting News. During the NFL Combine in February 2011, McElroy scored a 43 out of 50 on the Wonderlic Test of intelligence. His score was originally reported as a 48, which would have tied the all-time high for a quarterback set by Ryan Fitzpatrick.

McElroy was a student at Carroll Senior High School, Southlake, Texas, playing football under the head coach Todd Dodge. In his junior and sophomore years, McElroy played behind Chase Daniel who was later considered with the Heisman Trophy when playing with the Missouri Tigers. In his debut season as a starter, in 2005, McElroy passed for 4,636 yards, 56 touchdowns and nine interceptions on his way to a 16-0 year and his first state championship.
