Greg Koubek (born March 15 1969) is an American retired basketball player, best known for his collegiate experience in Duke University between 1987 and 1991. Koubek had a brief stint participating in the United States Basketball League (USBL) shortly after graduating from his college. After that, he was a professional for the following 6 years across South Africa, Turkey, Hungary and Japan. Koubek was laid off in the year 1997 and then returned in his home in the Capital District of New York. Koubek became the Executive Director for the Albany YMCA. Koubek moved to California in the year 2000, where he worked as Executive Director of the Gardena-Carson Family YMCA. Additionally, he manages an annual basketball camp along with his brother Tim and Greg, which is known as Greg Koubek’s Basketball Camp. In the year 2018 Koubek was appointed as the Executive Director for the brand-new Triunfo YMCA in Westlake Village, California, opening in 2019.
As a senior in the 1990-91 season, Koubek made NCAA men’s basketball history. He played in 13 games, and played in every single one of them which included the fourth and final Final Four where Duke avenged the 1990 Championship game by taking UNLV the first, and sole loss in the 1990-91 campaign. In the process, Koubek became the first player to play in all four Final Fours of the NCAA. Koubek was also among the very few players who appeared in more than 145 career games (Koubek’s 146 games played in his career is the second-highest number behind Christian Laettner’s 147 games in Duke the history of Duke.) In that time, Duke won the ACC regular season championship, and then went on to win the first time in a row of back-to-back NCAA championships. Koubek was captain of the team in his senior year as well.

A native of the Albany, New York area, Koubek attended Shenendehowa High School from 1985 until 1987 at Clifton Park. He played in the basketball team to a state title as an undergraduate in 1987. He then became the first athlete ever in the history of the school to get their jersey number taken off. After the 1987 season, the team was awarded as a McDonald’s All-American, and he was awarded the co-honoree award of the Mr. New York Basketball award, which is given to the best state boys’ basketball player. Koubek ended his senior year with 1,972 points and grabbing 682 rebounds, which were the highest in school history.
Koubek’s time with The Duke Blue Devils was an overall bleak one, in terms of personal stats. In the second and third seasons, he was a starter in one game but he was a part of every single game. Between his sophomore and freshman seasons, he scored 312 point. Duke took home his first ACC Tournament in 1988, during his freshman year. He additionally made it all up to an NCAA Tournament Final Four – the first of five consecutive Final Four appearances. In 1990, as a junior, Duke made it to the 1990 National Championship but Duke’s All- American point guard Bobby Hurley, had an intestinal virus the night before the game. This led to Duke being defeated by UNLV at the score was 103-73. The score remains the biggest margin of defeat of defeat in NCAA Championship Game history. Koubek participated in the entire 38 games and was in 12 of them.
