As of 1995 Howes completed his graduation from Franklin Pierce High School. He was a freshman of college soccer for Stetson University. He later moved onto Oregon State University, playing soccer in the years 1998 as well as 1999. He also was a player with the Willamette Valley Firebirds of the Premier Development League. On February 7 in 2000 Seattle Sounders selected him in the Seattle Sounders selected Howes in the first round (eighth overall) of the USL A-League draft. He finished third place on the list of points in the 2000 season, and was awarded as the year’s A-League rookie of the Year. On the 10th of October the 10th of October, 2001, Howes signed with the Milwaukee Wave in the National Professional Soccer League. He was named for make the team for the season 2000-2001.
