Greg Aplin Biography

Greg Aplin is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on October 9, 1952 in Northern Rhodesia, Australia. Aplin was born in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia on the 9th of October, 1952. He was a student at the University of Cape Town, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honors. He was employed by the Rhodesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to his national service in the British South Africa Police between 1975 between 1977 and 1975, during the period he received the General Service Medal. He then returned back to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was granted a three-year assignment to Sydney. Aplin was the acting director of the Rhodesia Information Service in Sydney at the time it was shut down in the wake of the change to the Mugabe administration in the month of May of 1980. In 1980, he returned to new independent Zimbabwe to assist the government in the area of regional development and also scheduling visits to the state.

In the wake of Ian Glachan announced his retirement, Aplin was preselected as the Liberal Party’s candidate for the seat at the 2003 state elections. He was able to secure more than 16,826 first-preference votes, beating the closest contestant, Albury City Councillor and Independent candidate Clare Douglas, who received 8,595 votes for first preference. Two other Albury City councillors polled third and fourth place, including Olympian Rob Ballard receiving 5,267 votes as well as Labor Party candidate Nico Matthews received 4,710 votes.

Aplin relocated from the United States to Australia in 1981 and started working in the field of television. He was employed by Wollongong, Orange, and Albury which is where he was appointed station manager for Prime Television AMV-4, a position which he held for 13 consecutive years. He was awarded the Logie Award as the Executive Producer of a television program. In 2001, as the Australian regional television stations began centralised, he became the administrator for the University of New South Wales School of Rural Health in Albury and Wagga Wagga. In the following year, he was a researcher and adviser on media for the Member of Farrer, Sussan Ley.

In March 2006, Peter Debnam (who was Opposition leader at the time) promoted Aplin to the Opposition front bench as the Shadow Minister for Housing. Aplin was re- elected at the 2007 and 2011 general elections. Prior to the 2011 general election, Aplin held the shadow portfolio of Mental Health and Aboriginal Affairs under Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell. However, Aplin was not selected to join the O’Farrell ministry, and remained on the backbench under Premiers Mike Baird and Gladys Berejiklian. He retired at the 2019 election.
