When International halfback John Kolc suffering ankle ligament injury, Murray spent some time in the first grade of 1977, only to return to lead the reserve side to a first-class position when Kolc returned to full fitness. 1978 saw Murray succeed Kolc as the first grade’s halfback for the majority of the season, however the rise of future world champion Peter Sterling caused him to play around with the different grades between 1979 and the year 1980. Murray was made coach of the Illawarra Steelers for the 1991 Winfield Cup season. He guided the club to its first finals appearance in 1992 and during his tenure, the Steelers won more games than they lost. He was dismissed as coach in April 1995 after he facilitated negotiations between Steelers players and representatives of the rebel Super League organisation. He was the only person out of the countless players, coaches and administrators involved with the Super League saga to lose his job as a direct consequence.
