Graham Coughlan (born 18 November 1974) is an Irish professional manager of football in addition to a player from the past who played center back. The summer of 2005, he was brought back together with former coach Paul Sturrock when he moved back to northwestern England to be promoted to Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed amount. In his first season with the club, Graham did well and proved popular with the club’s fans and management alike as he earned a regular spot in the team, and being appointed manager from Lee Bullen, while the Scot’s injuries frequently prevented him from playing in the squad.
On 4 July 2007, Coughlan was released by Sheffield Wednesday after being deemed surplus to requirements. Coughlan then signed for Rotherham United on 13 July . He made his debut on 11 August in a 0–0 draw with Hereford United, and was almost ever-present throughout the 2007-08 season. He scored his only goal for Rotherham in a 1-1 draw with Brentford.
In March 2007, Coughlan was allowed compassionate leave following the death of his brother. He missed 5 games, and on his return was made train with the youth team by Brian Laws so he asked to be sent on loan after failing to feature for the first team under new boss Brian Laws. He immediately managed to agree a deal to stay at Burnley until the end of the season. However, he only started one game, the 0-0 draw with Luton Town, before returning to Sheffield Wednesday, where he was told by manager Brian Laws that he had no future at the club, and made available for transfer.
A long-lasting, highly successful stint with the club followed that made Coughlan becoming a permanent fixture getting his name on the PFA Division Three team of the year in 2001-2002. He was a crucial player in the Plymouth Championship winning teams for Division Three which was where he was the leading goalscorer, as well as Division Two in which he was voted as the Division Two’s player of the Year. Coughlan was named the most popular player in the club in 2002. He also was selected in the most memorable Plymouth Team by fans to celebrate the club’s first hundred years of being a pro football club. Coughlan served as Vice Captain for Plymouth and his impact and stature was lost for two years as a player in their defense when he was traded to Sheffield Wednesday which they then were able to fill in by Krisztian Timar.

Coughlan began his professional career with Leinster Senior League side Cherry Orchard and later transferred towards League of Ireland club Bray Wanderers. He was 21 when he was invited to England by the then Blackburn Rovers manager Ray Harford however he struggled to secure his place on the Premier League Champions’ first team. A loan stint with Swindon Town and Livingston followed before he secured his permanent transfer towards this Scottish Club in summer of 1999. He impressed during his time in the club’s loan. Coughlan enjoyed two seasons of success at Livingston before returning to England to join Devon team Plymouth Argyle.
Coughlan began his professional career in his home country of Ireland in the Irish club Bray Wanderers before being signed by Blackburn Rovers. He was a part of Livingston in 1999. His performance at the Scottish club earned him the move into Plymouth Argyle two years later. He was a key member of the team that won the two Football League divisional championships between 2002 and 2004 and was a favorite among supporters due to his insistence on his game in the middle of their defense. Coughlan signed with Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 before going into League Two to play for Rotherham United. He joined Shrewsbury Town a year later and also took on the role of coaching their youngsters. He joined Southend United in July 2010.
On 12 April 2006 Coughlan was named Sheffield Wednesday Player of the Year 2005-06. It was the fifth time Graham has won such an award, having previously being named Player of the Year twice at Livingston and twice at Plymouth.
