He was also the only student selected as the representative of Durham during Durham’s Annual NUS conference. He also served as the chairman of the Northern Area Conservative Students (1987-1989) and was a member of the Conservative Party’s National Union Executive Committee (1988-1989).

Sir Graham Stuart Brady (born 20 May 1967) is a British Conservative Party politician, who has been MP (MP) in the constituencies of Altrincham in addition to Sale West since 1997. He was Shadow Minister of Europe for four Conservative leaders prior to quitting in 2007 over protest against David Cameron’s opposition for grammar school reforms. Brady was succeeded by Michael Spicer as Chairman of the 1922 Committee on 26 May 2010. On the 1st of December, the year 2010, Brady received the honor of being named “Backbencher of the Year” by The Spectator at its annual awards for parliamentary members. He resigned his position as 1922 Committee chair on the 24th of May 2019 to investigate launching a contest in the race for Conservative Party leadership in the months that followed However, he ultimately decided not to be a candidate for Leader. Brady briefly was reinstated to the 1922 Committee on the 3rd of September, 2019, and was appointed its interim Chair “until a new executive is elected in the next session of Parliament”. Brady was later re- elected as its permanent Chair on the 20th of January 2020.

On 29 May 2007, Brady resigned his post as Shadow Minister for Europe in protest at Conservative leader David Cameron’s opposition to grammar schools. He told the BBC that: “faced with a choice between a front bench position that I have loved and doing what I believe to be right for my constituents and for the many hundreds of thousands of families who are ill-served by state education in this country, there is in conscience only one option open to me”, and argued that “grammar schools in selective areas are exactly the motor that does drive social mobility more effectively than comprehensive areas.” Brady’s own constituency has retained a selective rather than comprehensive education system.
