He returned to Chicago after his father’s death in 2001 and began his pursuit of journalism. After his father’s passing, he wrote an essay that appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times. This article opened up the possibility of him becoming a freelance writer for high school sports. Weigel was a Chicago-based journalist who covered high school sports and regularly wrote about local athletes. He hosted a weekly radio program on WCKG called “Celebrity Rock” He and his wife Tiffany moved back to Los Angeles a year later. There, he was a clerk in The Los Angeles Times’ sports department. He started writing freelance articles for The Times and was then hired as a full-time writer for high school sports staff.

Weigel’s first on-camera journalism job came in 2005 as a freelance reporter for KUSI in San Diego for the weekend morning show—doing live remotes at events as well as covering breaking news. He continued working nights at The L.A. Times and mornings for the TV station. In February 2006, he was hired by the CBS-owned and operated station KOVR in Sacramento as a general assignment reporter, covering breaking news, politics and national stories like the Lake Tahoe wildfires and wayward whales Delta and Dawn.

In February 2008, Weigel joined the cast of the already-successful morning show Morning Express with Robin Meade. Weigel and the CNN sports team extensively covered the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In March 2011, Weigel became the new weekend sports anchor and reporter at WLS Channel 7 in Chicago, a station where his father spent 17 years as an anchor. He replaced Ryan Chiaverini, who became co-host of Channel 7’s morning show “Windy City Live,” a role Weigel himself had been under consideration for. [1] Weigel decided to go back to his “news” roots and in October 2014 accepted the anchor role for the 6pm and 10pm shows Monday-Friday in St. Louis at the Fox affiliate KTVI, Channel 2.

Weigel made a comeback to Hollywood in 1995. He landed small speaking roles on Party of Five and ER, as well as guest starring on JAG and Charmed. Weigel was appointed as a series regular for the NBC sitcom Jenny in 1997. Jenny McCarthy is a former Chicagoan. The series lasted just one season. He also played the role of the Dark Jedi Yun during the Star Wars Jedi Knight II video game. Weigel started his film career soon after, playing the lead role alongside William Shatner, Eric McCormack, and Emilio Estevez in Free Enterprise. He was then joined by Charlie Sheen and Charlie Sheen in Rated X, a Showtime movie.

Evanston Township High School’s Weigel graduated in 1987. There, he performed on the stage with the Piven Theatre Workshop’s Young People’s Company, which included such luminaries as Joan Cusack, John Cusack, and Jeremy Piven. WLS-TV employed him as an intern during summers. After completing his London studies, Weigel continued his education at University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. He graduated in 1992 with a degree as a theatre director.

Weigel was first an actor with Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre. He played the title role in Master Harold and The Boys. Weigel also worked with other theatres such as Bailiwick, The Wisdom Bridge and Organic. He was first seen on television in a small role on The Untouchables, a local TV series. Weigel was hired in 1993 to host a newsmagazine show that featured younger journalists. Weigel decided to follow in his father’s footsteps after his death.
