Graeme Payne was born in Dundee on the 13th February 1956 in Dundee. When he was playing with St Columba’s Boys Club, Payne was a member of Dundee United on schoolboy forms in May 1971. As Jim McLean became Dundee United manager later in the year, he put a huge importance on the club’s development of its own youngsters, and Payne would be among the first players to make it through. In the form of a provisional hire and a player, he was drafted to play in the reserves team during 1972. Following his professional debut in 1973, he made his debut for the team at 17 on the first morning of the 1973-1974 season in a match against East Fife in a Scottish League Cup match. He was a regular player throughout the rest of the season, culminating in his appearance at 1974’s Scottish Cup Final defeat against Celtic. Prior to that Payne’s goal in the semi-final replay against Heart of Midlothian in the semi-final replay contributed to getting United through to their debut appearance the final of the tournament.
Payne quit Dundee United in May 1984 He joined Arbroath with a modest transfer fee. He was also a part of Brechin City, and St Johnstone before retiring from football and focusing on in the insurance business.
Payne was a member of Scotland at both the youth and the at the under-21 level of international competition. He was included in the pool that was constituted of 40 players for 1978’s World Cup, but didn’t make it into the final squad, and was never a part of the squad at an international level.

Graeme Payne (born 13 February 1956) is a Scottish former footballer who was an wingsman. In Dundee United he played in two Scottish League Cup final winning teams. He was the first recipient from this award. Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year award.
Following his appearances in the 1975-76 campaign were cut short due to illness, Payne re-established himself as a regular first-team player during the final stages of the 1970s. He was awarded the first SPFA Young Player of the Award in 1978. He was a part of the Dundee United team that won the first two major trophy for the club when he played in the 1979 Scottish League Cup Final win against Aberdeen as well as the 1980 Final in which United won the trophy over Dundee. Through the 1980s the club was gaining more respect, but Payne had been playing less frequently in Dundee’s first squad. In the time that Dundee United were Premier Division champions in 1982-83, Payne played just three times in the league and was a part of the second half of the campaign on loan at Morton.
