The month of February was 1978. McQueen made the move to Leeds to their rivals Manchester United for PS495,000. After signing, McQueen said that “99% of players want to play for Manchester United and the rest are liars.” McQueen was announcing just two weeks prior on Shoot the magazine that he would like to remain in Elland Road for his entire career. He was instrumental in helping Manchester United reach the 1979 FA Cup Final, scoring an assist within the final minute of the match in the 86th.

McQueen finally gained an FA Cup winner’s medal in the 1983 FA Cup Final after a replay versus Brighton & Hove Albion. McQueen was also in the team that was defeated in the 1983 Football League Cup Final versus Liverpool that same season. He finally left Old Trafford in the 1985 close season, after losing his first-team place to Paul McGrath and not being included in the 1985 FA Cup Final team that defeated Everton 1–0.
McQueen and Hunter were both excellent at the back during the next season, with a particular focus on Leeds’s campaign for the European Cup, during which McQueen scored three goals. McQueen was suspended during in the 1974 European Cup Final, after being dismissed in the semi-final match against Barcelona. Leeds were subsequently defeated by 2-0 in the final against Bayern Munich.

McQueen had been a goalie when a child, but later switched to center-back. McQueen was signed at the aged of 18 with St Mirren. McQueen quickly had scouts from other clubs observing his progress. Leeds were the winners of their first League Championship, with a streak of 29 games without a loss from the beginning of the season, with McQueen playing a crucial role with Norman Hunter as Leeds’ primary centre back pair. The end of the season McQueen was selected for selection to his place in the Scotland squad and was able to make his international debut against Belgium.
McQueen was now a regular for the Scotland national football team, as he was selected for the 1978 FIFA World Cup squad for Argentina, although he could not play due to injury. McQueen played his last match for Scotland in 1981, gaining 30 caps and scoring five goals.
