In the latter part of 1990, Gong continued to devote her efforts to the cause of laborers and women and she also expanded her imagination to include the poor and oppressed people in Korean society. In her novel of 1998, My Sister Bongsoon, Gong depicted the women’s lives who was a woman in 1960s. In her best-selling work, Our Happy Time, she discussed the issue of capital punishment as well as in her autobiographical novel Home of Happiness, she described the realities of the household of a divorcee. Gong is an author who is feminist. In her writings her work, the themes of women’s struggle as well as that of the labor movement are merged into characters that have to face the dual challenge of creating their own identity following the movement for equality and finding a home for them in a male- dominated culture. When the chaos and oppression of the 1980s gave way to relatively calm and prosperity in the 1990s, students who gave up so much to make the necessary social change now find themselves in a society that does not need their radical zeal and sacrifice. They are forced to live a life of normality without the orientation that once was a fundamental element of who they are. For women to be able to integrate back into society as citizens of the common man involves not just embracing the materialistic ideals that they previously resisted, but also subserviing their own gender to patriarchal rules. The resulting anger and confusion form the basis of Gong’s work.
It was in her college years in the 1980s when she became involved in the student movement. It was this exposure that Gong began to develop her sense of the need for a purpose. In 1985, she earned her B.A. at Literature degree at Yonsei University. The novel she wrote her first Rising Dawn was a direct result of her involvement in the labor and student movements of the period. Her earlier novels chronicle the 1980s and students who, just like the author were born in the decade of protests and political upheavals within South Korea.
While social activism is one of Gong’s main thematic concerns, another equally important interest is the issue of women, particularly the failure of society to shed its patriarchal way of thinking. Gong continues to advocate gender equality, often pointing out that this equality, which is guaranteed by law, is not yet a reality. Her 1993 novel Go Alone Like the Horn of a Rhinoceros, which deals directly with women’s issues, was made into a movie (in 1995 Go Alone Like a Rhino Horn was the first of Gong’s novels to be made into a feature film), as well as play.
