Giovanni Galli (Italian pronunciation: [dZo’vanni’galli] 29 April in 1958) is an Italian former professional footballer, who was goalkeeper and is currently a politician.

As a player, Galli played in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico under manager Enzo Bearzot. Italy were beaten during the group stage by the eventual semi- finalists France with the leadership of Michel Platini. In the course of the tournament, during Italy’s draw with the eventual winners Argentina at the end of their 2nd match of the group on June 5, Galli drew criticism in the media for his goalkeeping in Maradona’s equaliser. After the match Galli was not invited to Italy. In all, Galli obtained 19 caps for Italy.

Galli retired in 1996 at the age of 38 after a brief stint with A.S. Lucchese- Libertas of Serie B.

Galli was the father of Niccolò Galli, a promising young footballer who died in a road accident on 9 February 2001, aged only 17. He is married to Anna, and also has two daughters, Camilla and Carolina.

Galli participated in Italy’s victory in 1982’s FIFA World Cup expedition, with no participation in any match however, he was used as a back-up to Dino Zoff, alongside Bordon. Similar events had occurred during the UEFA Euro 1980 tournament, which Italy was fourth in their home country and reached the semi- final. Galli was made his first national team appearance in a friendly game against Greece on October 5, 1983. The match ended with the victory of 3-0 for Italy.

In Pisa, Galli started his career with his hometown’s youth team as a midfielder, before moving to the position of goalkeeper. His professional career began at ACF Fiorentina in 1977, which he played for 9 Serie A seasons. In 1986-87, he signed with A.C. Milan, a league club. A.C. Milan, being the first choice for three of his four seasons. He established him as being one of the country’s finest goalkeepers. He won the Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana during his first season. He also took part with the club in its double-header European Cup conquests, in 1989 and 1990. In 1993, he played as the starting keeper for Torino Calcio for a single season, reaching the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, and the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup, despite a disappointing mid-table finish. He finished his stint in the top division at the end of the 1994–95 season, after being named backup goalkeeper behind Luca Bucci at AC Parma, who won the UEFA Cup that season, and reached the Coppa Italia final, also placing third in Serie A.
