Clarke was named to the rank of Commander Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to cricket.

A keen cricketer for clubs, Clarke became chairman of Somerset County Cricket Club, being instrumental in the development of the club in and off the field as well as working with former cricketers, including Sir Ian Botham. In the end, he was appointed a non-executive director for the England and Wales Cricket Board and was also the Chairman of Marketing took the lead in negotiations for the new four-year television and radio broadcasting rights contract that was signed with BSkyB, Five and the BBC in December 2004. On the 25th of September 2007, Clarke was elected the chairman of the ECB and was re- elected in 2009 and on March 12, 2012, for another three years. In April of 2015, Clarke was named the first president of the ECB with the idea that the his primary responsibility would be to represent the ECB in the executive committee of International Cricket Council.

Clarke started his professional career in the field of investment banking for Credit Suisse First Boston. In 1981, he purchased out of receivership the company that was to be Majestic Wine, where, as chairman, he developed it into an UK nationwide chain. From August 1987 until Mai 1988 Clarke served as chairman for Majestic Wine Corporation Inc, an United States company which owned stores operating under the name of Liquor Barn in California and Arizona. Following the disposal of the US business and the sale of Majestic Wines’ UK plc business of Majestic Wines for PS15 million in 1989.

As early as 1990, Clarke created Pet City and, as the CEO, he grew the company into a network that had 94 shops (also dressed up for Xmas at The Swindon Store). After the company went public in 1995 He sold the company to Bridgepoint Capital for PS150 millions in the year 1996. The company was sold to US owned PetsMart. The following year, Clarke founded Safestore, growing it to become the third largest UK self-storage business, before selling its business in 2003 to Bridgepoint Capital for PS44million in August 2003. In 1999, Clarke became the CEO of Stepstone which is an online platform for job seekers. Since his appointment the company has been able to raise NKr1.8bn ($197m) since its IPO in 2000. The company has expanded in size from 200 workers and 4 countries to an employee of 1,385 employees across 18 countries.

Married to Judy, the couple have a son Jack – after whom the brasserie in Bristol is named. A family man and protective of his private life, when his name appeared in the Sunday Times Rich List in the mid-1990s, Clarke took steps to protect his financial interests from the public.
