Gigi Masin (born on the 24th of October, 1955) is a Italian composer as well as an ambient musician and producer hailing from Venice. Most well-known is his album Wind in 1986, as well as an artist in Gaussian Curve. The group is comprised of composed of Jonny Nash, Young Marco and Young Marco.
He launched the album collaboratively titled The Wind Collector with Alessandro Monti on the Marco Pandin record label Divergo (now Stella*Nera).
In 2007 a flood in Venice destroyed nearly all of his work, tapes, records and musical equipment. The disappointment caused by this tragic event put Masin off creating music for a while until a friend requested a new album from him, which led Masin to buy a computer to make music, starting a new phase of innovation.
He recorded The Last DJ (2008) and Infanthree (2010) for the Italian netlabel Laverna, followed by a series of artistic video creations with visual artists such as the painter and designer Luis Filipe Cunha.
A participant in Italy’s underground electronic community, Masin recorded Wind privately and released the album only at one of the small events in 1986. The remaining copies were destroyed after Masin’s home was destroyed by floods. But it was popular after being sampled by musicians like Bjork and Nujabes which led to an increase in the interest in Masin’s music. Music from Memory released the compilation Talk to the Sea in 2014, and in the next year, Masin released a reissue of Wind under his own company The Bear on the Moon.

Despite the fact that his childhood dream of studying violin , it never came into real, the passion for music didn’t wane and soon led to him playing guitar (spending time learning songs from Pete Townsend of The Who) and finally achieving his desire to become DJ and radio DJ at the age of 18 years old. As host of public radio’s late night show, Masin could perform long sets of a variety of music that he adored. After more than 10 years of playing the role of a dream, Masin found himself looking for a job , as broadcasting stations in the public sector were shutting down because of changes to laws. Masin initially tried to create music based on requests from his friends working in the theatre, and used his extensive collection of recordings and unusual music to accompany their shows. Instead of playing the music in their “normal” way he would play them faster or reversed or record them onto tape and then add different sounds when playing them back. It was during the late 1970s experiments with sound collages created using tape loops and field recordings, as well as turntablism which Masin discovered a different method to express his artistic self that culminated in an album he released as his first Wind in 1987.
Masin’s first album Wind in the year 1986 (self-released and available for download) was a personal endeavor originally designed as a gift to give away at local shows and to friends.
After nearly a decade long hiatus, Masin reappeared on the scene with the solo album Lontano (2001) and the collaborative album Moltitudine in Labirinto (2003) with Giuseppe Caprioli, both on Giovanni Antognozzi’s Ants Records.
