On the 8th of September, 2012, aged of 29 years old, he made his first appearance for his country West African nation in a qualifier against Tunisia to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. In the match, Leone Stars were just slightly eliminated , and Sankoh received a red card during the second game in the match against that team the 13th of October.

Sankoh was signed to FC Augsburg from the 2010-11 season. He was contracted for two years. It began with the second. Bundesliga It was followed by one year of being promoted up to Bundesliga. He played less , and in his third year with the club, even less. In February 2013 , he changed clubs over to Chinese Henan Jianye FC.

Sankoh was a player at Freetown as a player for the Royal Stars and was selected for the Sierra Leone national football team at 17 years old but he was not able to make it to his first game. The year 2000 saw him ordered to leave the country due to having the same surname as the rebel leader Foday Sankoh even although he was not related to Foday Sankoh. He was transported to The Netherlands by boat and was a refugee in an asylum-seekers centre in Rijsbergen. After the move to Heemskerk the following day, he was invited to play for De Kennemers in Beverwijk. In the meantime, he was scouted by Stormvogels Telstar.

In the 2004-05 campaign, Sankoh moved from FC Groningen after having played 17 games for Stormvogels Telstar. The 2005/06 season was when Sankoh became part of the ‘the Pride of the North’ and played a significant role in its success the following season. In the playoffs in the 2006-07 season Sankoh got his goal of the season for Groningen in the game at home against Feyenoord that was won by a score of 2-1. In part due to that goal Groningen was able to make it into the semi-finals. In May of 2010 it was revealed that Sankoh was forced to quit FC Groningen after six seasons. The contract he was due to expire was not renewed.

Sankoh returned to the Netherlands in July 2015. He completed training courses with his old team FC Groningen and with PEC Zwolle. In July, he signed a contract until mid-2016 with Roda JC Kerkrade, which had just been promoted to the Eredivisie. He had included in his contract the possibility to exchange the club for another after half a season. After half a year, he left the club to return to China. He went to play football with second divisionist Meizhou Kejia F.C., where he signed a contract for two years. After six months without a club, he played for ACV in mid-2018 till the end of mid-2019.
