He was appointed the head of the School of Archaeology and Palaeoecology in 1997, and was appointed Professor of Scientific Archaeology in 1998. In his position as Professor of Archaeology and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) in Queen’s from 2001 to the year 2010 He was responsible of Academic and Financial Planning, Economic Development and External Affairs. He was a member of the Northern Ireland (NI) Committee of the Institute of Directors, the NI Economic Development Forum, the NI Science and Industry Panel (MATRIX) as well as the boards of the NI Science Park and Business in the Community. He was Chairman and Director of the Board for the Management of Queen’s University’s commercialisation firm, QUBIS. He was vice-chairman and director of Invest Northern Ireland from 2008 until 2014. In 2010, he was appointed Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling. He was the chair of an audit of the conditions and terms of teacher work for the Scottish Government in 2011 and was an outside board member overseeing the merger between the Department of Employment and Learning and the Department for Enterprise, Trade and Investment to create the Department for the Economy in Northern Ireland.

He is Vice-Convener of Universities Scotland, a Board member of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) and Chairman of the UCEA Scottish Committee as well as an active part of Universities UK and a trustee of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland. McCormac was Vice-Chairman of Bridge Integrated Primary School in Northern Ireland during the 1990s. McCormac was appointed to be a Fellow in the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2017.

Between 1990 to 2001, he served as the Director of the High Precision Carbon Dating Facility at Queen’s University Belfast and was a lecturer as well as professor of senior level in Environmental Monitoring. In the course of this time he also founded CAF, which is now the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (CAF) as well as the Centre for the Climate, Environment and Chronology (Chrono Centre). He was an officer of the Archaeology Committee of the Royal Irish Academy. He carbon-dated numerous monuments that are of international importance to English Heritage, Historic Scotland and the Environment and Heritage Service including; Stonehenge, the Pazyryk burials in Siberia, Seahenge near Sandringham and The Dover Bronze Age Boat, Sutton Hoo and New Grange.
