Britton started his playing career with Celtic with two league appearances, and also spending the time in loan at Reading in which he played the same number of games before beginning his second of his two stints at Partick Thistle in 1992. After two years with Firhill, Britton played in more than sixty league games and scored fifteen goals before making the move to Dundee.
