Britton started his playing career with Celtic with two league appearances, and also spending the time in loan at Reading in which he played the same number of games before beginning his second of his two stints at Partick Thistle in 1992. After two years with Firhill, Britton played in more than sixty league games and scored fifteen goals before making the move to Dundee. This was his first time of two seasons at an organization for Britton as he compiled the same performance in Dens Park before signing for Dunfermline Athletic in 1996. Britton scored 13 league goals in his debut year in the club’s East End Park, helping The Pars to fifth place in the league. The next year, Britton only appeared in less than half of the games and scored only three goals while the club finished eighth. For 1998-99 Britton was a regular with the first team, but, after scoring only scoring one goal, he was released mid-November He was on loan at Raith Rovers, where he scored just once in five games. On 7 October 2013, Britton became academy director at Partick Thistle. Britton was appointed Partick Thistle chief executive in May 2018, succeeding Ian Maxwell. Following the sacking of Alan Archibald in October 2018, Britton was made caretaker manager.
