Gerhard Gundermann is one of the most popular and richest Singer- Songwriter who was born on February 21, 1955 in Weimar, Germany. Gerhard Rudiger Gundermann, who was more often referred to as Gundermann (February 21 1955 – June 21 in 1998) was a German musician, singer and songwriter. A former excavating operator, his music career started in former East Germany, where he became famous for his smart songs that often contain melancholy lyrics infused with political commentary. Following German unification, he was very popular with the former East Germans who felt disenfranchised in the newly-reunited nation.

Gundermann led an ascetic life and avoided the use of alcohol, drugs smoking and alcohol, and was a vegetarian who was committed. But Gundermann was a solitary worker and had a very limited sleep schedule. having a busy recording and performing schedule, Gundermann was also at work on a massive excavator that was digging out coal seams and was concerned that his music might become less authentic in the event that it became his sole method of living. Perhaps due to the stress of work Gundermann suffered stroke on the 21st of June of 1998 at 43 years of age living in Spreetal. He was survived by four children. His death was followed by the death of his co-worker and friend colleague Tamara Danz, also 43 just two years.

Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Gundermann ran unsuccessfully to be a member of the Volkskammer during the elections of March 1990 in the left-wing group Aktionsbundnis Vereinigte Linke.

In Weimar, Gundermann moved with his family to Hoyerswerda in the year 1967. After completing his secondary school and one semester at the Military Academy in Lobau however, he was exiled in 1975. A year later he took home the top prize and recording contract in the East German national song contest. The first album of his Manner Frauen and Machines (Men, Women, and Machines) was released in 1988, however unlike his solo acoustic recordings, the album was rock album featuring a backing band with upbeat tracks such as “Halte durch” (Keep Up). The album also featured an ode to his hometownof Hoyerswerda, “Hoy Woy.”

In 2018, a biographical movie by director Andreas Dresen, Gundermann. Gundermann was portraited by Alexander Scheer. The movie was awarded with six German Movie Awards (Deutscher Filmpreis) in 2019 by 10 nominations, among them the “german Oscars” for the best movie, best actor, best screenplay (Laila Stieler) and best director.
