In his first job in the club of FC Alkmaar (AZS) he was the coach responsible for team members from the amateur side (and was Holland Champion in 1985) and was also an coaching assistant to Piet de Visser for his senior squad. From 1986 to 1989 , he was with FC Haarlem starting out as an assistant coach for Dick Advocaat. Then, he was taking over the role as head coach in the latter part of the year.
