She has written over 170 books which include Peter Pan in Scarlet (2004) which is the first official follow-up to Peter Pan commissioned by Great Ormond Street Hospital which is the owner of the copyright to Peter Pan. She has translated her work into over 44 different languages across the globe. She has been awarded an award called the Carnegie Medal twice and the Michael L. Printz Award as well as other awards.
J. M. Barrie granted all the rights of Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1929. Then in 2004, to mark Peter Pan’s centennial The hospital announced an initiative to identify the writer of a sequel. McCaughrean was awarded the prize by submitting an outline of the story and an excerpt from the chapter. Peter Pan in Scarlet was published worldwide on the 5th of October 2006, with the book being published within the UK by Oxford University Press and in the US by Simon & Schuster.
In recognition of her life’s work as writer for children McCaughrean was named the British candidate to be the 2004 winner of the biannual world-wide Hans Christian Andersen Award, the most prestigious international award available to authors of children’s literature. She was named as an Honorary Fellow at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2006 and was elected a fellow of the English Association in 2010. She has been an Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature since the year 2010.
