Doogue was initially engaged with Tim Blue and then to ABC executive Ian Carroll who died from pancreatic cancer on August 19th 2011. Together with Carroll Doogue, she was blessed with two children as well as two stepchildren. The elder daughter of Tim Blue, Eliza Harvey has also been an ABC journalist. She is engaged to Adam Harvey, a son of journalist Peter Harvey.
Doogue was anchor of the Radio National’s Life Matters program for 11 years beginning at the beginning of 1992. She was awarded a United Nations Media Peace Prize and two Penguin Awards for her role in ABC TV’s coverage on the Gulf War. She hosted Compass in 1998 on ABC TV from 1998 to 2017. Since 2005, she’s been the host of her own Saturday Extra on Saturdays and the Extra shows in the radio station Radio National.

After finishing at the University of Western Australia with an bachelor of Arts degree, Doogue was planning to become teacher, but instead she decided to pursue an enlisted position in The West Australian newspaper. Doogue later joined The Australian and spent several years in the United Kingdom as London correspondent for Rupert Murdoch’s Australian newspapers. ABC executive management were impressed by Doogue’s presence on air during an interview on The Four Corners program, that she was given the opportunity to host on Nationwide. In 1985, she along with Richard Morecroft co-hosted The National The National, the ABC’s brief-lived trial of a national, evening news program that ran for an hour that combined news and current affairs together with Max Walsh and Richard Carleton as the chief reporters.
She was for TEN-10 Sydney from 1988 to 1989, as a co-presenter on Eyewitness News with Steve Liebmann and also on commercial radio, with 2UE before returning to the ABC in 1990.
In November 2018, Doogue was inducted into the Australian Media Hall of Fame.
