After his departure 1860 Munich, Vanenburg immediately returned to PSV in which he was made the manager of the youth team. However, he during this time, he also managed the former club TSV for three months beginning in April 2004 and the team was eventually removed out of the Bundesliga.
Vanenburg was an undisputed player for the Amsterdam side soon after the start of the season, assisting the strikers Marco van Basten and Wim Kieft, and scoring 30 himself over two seasons as the club had two consecutive national championships. Before leaving in June 1986, he was scoring at least double- digits for two more seasons. Vanenburg, van Basten, Kieft were part of a steady flow of talented youngsters which also comprised Frank Rijkaard that helped to the club win three league championships between 1982 and 1985.
Vanenburg earned more than 40 caps for the Netherlands, appearing at the 1990 World Cup and Euro 1988 and winning the latter tournament.
Vanenburg was also picked by manager Leo Beenhakker for his 1990 FIFA World Cup squad, but his contribution consisted of 45 minutes against Egypt (1–1 group stage draw), in an eventual round-of-16 exit in Italy. His last international appearance came as a substitute in a 2–2 draw to Poland on 14 October 1992, in Rotterdam in a 1994 World Cup qualification match.
Vanenburg joined PSV Eindhoven for 1986-87, scoring nine goals over 34 matches during his debut season. It ended with victory in the league. Vanenburg played in the squad that took home the treble later in the season and was a part of the team that played as a finalist in the European Cup and converting his penalty shootout effort against S.L. Benfica. The backbone of this triple winning team was created by his former teammates from Ajax which included Frank Arnesen, Kieft, Ronald Koeman and Soren Lerby.

Gerald Mervin Vanenburg (born 5 March 1964) is an Dutch Former professional soccer player who was an right winger.
Vanenburg began his career with the Netherlands on April 14, 1982, aged just 18 years old, playing all 90 minutes during a 1-0 friendly victory against Greece in Eindhoven. Vanenburg was a part of the Dutch squad for 1983’s FIFA World Youth Championship. Vanenburg was picked as a participant in his participation in the UEFA Euro 1988 tournament in West Germany, appearing in every game in which the Oranje took the title.
He amassed Eredivisie totals of 372 games and 112 goals for Ajax and PSV combined, winning fifteen major titles between the two clubs, including the 1988 European Cup with the latter. Subsequently he played in Japan, France and Germany, in a 20-year professional career.
