Georgios Delikaris is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on July 22, 1951 in Piraeus, Attica, Greece. In the 1972-73 preseason camp, Delikaris is given the captain’s position in the team. However, his performances were inconsistent , and injuries were frequent. He was then removed from the captaincy but he was able to return to Chairman Nikolaos Goulandris (who was believed to be a fan of the player) after a string of impressive performances that concluded the season in a flurry of success and also a double for Olympiacos. The 1973-74 season is famous for his performance in the club’s biggest ever victory against Fostiras with a score of 11-0 and the return in the Championship with a record amount of goals and points. The following season, He was reappointed captain and played a key role during the two legs for the historic aggregate victory against Celtic F.C. at the European Champions Cup. The reason for this is that The Times reported on his technical skills, noting that he was informed of the secrets of football. He also excelled with his international performance, especially with West Germany, while enthusiastic reporters hailed him as being the only one to be able who could dribble Beckenbauer and later acknowledged his talents. The season was however followed by a riot as Delikaris protested the low compensation of the team’s Greek players, and Goulandris was forced to quit for reasons not yet known. On the 26th of June, 1975 Delikaris was part of the World’s Best XI alongside other legendary players like Johan Cruyff, Pele, Jairzinho as well as his teammate Olympiacos Milton Viera against R.S.C. Anderlecht in honour of Belgian legendary Paul Van Himst in an 8-3 defeat. The team took the title that was to be the final for several years. It was then news broke of Delikaris decision to leave, and there was speculation that he might be involved in discussions with Celtic.
Since 1981, Georgios Delikaris pulled himself away from the spotlight, never making public appearances and staying away from the field of football. It is not known the reasons behind the departure to Olympiacos and Panathinaikos and he prefers to keep the details private. The fact that he has been able to keep his silence has elevated him more to the status of a legend with the spread of numerous non-substantiated stories and anecdotes related to these times and also his life following football. There is a consensus that he’s faced severe financial difficulties at times, was involved in the auto trade business which has resulted in the loss of a substantial amount of money due to the downfall of the Albanian economy in 1997. He was co-owner of a restaurant in his neighborhood and was reported in 2009 that he was a taxi driver (though this was denied by relatives).
Delikaris reemerged in the spotlight after a number of years giving an informal interview to Greek newspaper Ta Nea (August 25, 1997). Amongst other things Delikaris admitted that it was a mistake to join Panathinaikos and that he was driven by certain enemies within Olympiacos to leave his favorite club, but refused to elaborate. At that time he was a partner in a restaurant. In 2004, he wrote a few articles for the sports newspaper Protathlitis and was said to attend an Olympiacos football game after a great number of years. He later attended an event (November 13, 2005) in his honor at the Olympiacos home ground merchandise store, during which he publicly apologised for moving to Panathinaikos.
After this Delikaris’ tracks were once again lost. However, on June 26, 2009 Greek football fans were shocked by news that Delikaris was in intensive care at “Evangelismos”, General Hospital with serious injuries, sustained during a car accident. Media was flooded with reports on Delikaris’ serious condition, while fans flocked to the hospital in support of their idol. Georgios Delikaris however made an impressive recovery and was last reported to had left intensive care in good condition and as of June,29 was awaiting to be cleared to return home to his wife and two daughters.
But, he showed in the preseason camp in the midst of his fellow players’ and fans in a rousing celebration. In the season, it was his turn to put in impressive performances at club and international levels. However , the club’s financial woes caused turmoil. Although In an open letter addressed to the Board, he expressed his desire to play for free because he loves the club and the team, there were constant indications from the media that his numerous injuries this season were caused by factors of financial nature instead of medical. In a game in the final stages of the season with PAOK, Delikaris took off his shirt and left the field in protest against his teammates’ performance. The game went from bad to worse. In the following season, he receiving the first time a red card, which led to a lot of protest, since Delikaris had been actually struck by an opponent with no response. Delikaris was well-known for his clean style of football. His relationship with his teammates took an unfavorable turn and at the end of 1977, they demanded that he be removed from the captaincy. Then the game, he was dismissed in the club Olympiacos with Kavala F.C. (January 8, 1978).

Delikaris is born in the year 1951. He started his career at his local team Argonaytis Piraeus FC. His moment of glory was in July 1968 when he was chosen to represent Piraeus in an exhibition game in which he played against the players from Athenian teams. One few months later (July 1969) He was signed on to Piraeus giants Olympiacos which was the team which he backed as a youngster at a cost of less than 1 million drachmas and the transfer between the four Olympiacos players.
The following season (1971-72) was a time of serving his national duty. It was to take its effect on the player who was frequently shut down because of fatigue and injuries caused by coach Alan Ashman. A portion of the media began to doubt whether he was loyal to the team and the rest members of the squad following. While little is known about particulars, his life away from the field of play continued to question the morality that were prevalent at the time, and eventually resulted in penalties and fines including a life-long exclusion from the national team that would later be removed. But, Delikaris did not cease to amaze people with his athletic abilities and received compliments from fellow players from abroad.
On October 19, 1981 Delikaris retired from professional football for reasons unknown to this day. During his career Delikaris was capped 32 times by the National Football Team of Greece scoring 7 goals.
