Bishop Smith was born in Abilene, Texas. He was raised as a Baptist and later converted to an Episcopal Church while a student at Baylor University. Smith completed his seminary training in Nashotah House situated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Smith was designated a deacon 1981 and was ordained into the clergy in 1982. Smith was a minister to congregations in both Texas as well as Michigan until he was appointed the Rector at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Des Moines, Iowa.
On the 3rd of November, 2001 Smith was appointed to the position as Bishop in Missouri after being elected on a third ballot. The Bishop was ordained the 6th of March, 2002, as Bishop Coadjutor of Bishop Hays Rockwell. He was then succeeded to his predecessor on June 6th on June 6, 2002. Bishop Smith is the 975th Bishop consecrated within the Episcopal Church.
