George William Taft (born 29 July 1993) is a English professional player of the game who is a left and centre back with League Two club Cambridge United.
Taft joined League Two club Burton Albion on May 30, 2014, on an agreement for two years. The player made his debut for the club during the 1-0 win away against Oxford United. From then on during the first half of the season Taft continued to play regularly until he injured his hamstring in the 4-3 loss at Carlisle United, which kept the player out for between six and eight weeks. Taft returned to action on the 17th of November, 2014 in which he played as an extra in place of Stuart Beavon in the last minutes of the 3-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers. It was also Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s debut game as the manager.
On 31 July 2015, Taft joined League Two club Cambridge United on a six-month loan. He returned to Burton on 29 October 2015 after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a league match against Yeovil Town.
On 3 January 2015, Taft scored the first goal of his professional career with a half volley from 12 yards in Burton’s 1–0 home victory against promotion rivals Shrewsbury Town. Burton manager Hasselbaink praised Taft saying “George took his goal very well.” He dedicated his goal to Richard Mayne, a victim who lost his life in Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Taft helped the club earn promotion to League One for the first time in its history. In the 2014–15 season, Taft made 34 appearance for Burton and scored once. At the club’s award ceremony, Taft was named the club’s player in the community.
Taft was on loan with Swedish team Karlstad BK in Division 1 Sodra in March of 2012. He played 12 games, and returned in Leicester on July 12, 2012. The end of the 2012-13 campaign, Taft signed an extension for one year with Leicester. On August 29, the 29th of August Taft was signed by League Two club York City on a one-month loan. He made his debut just two days later, in loss at home at Exeter City. Taft made 3 appearances with York but was then transferred back to Leicester on September 23, 2013 following a fall in the middle of David McGurk, Daniel Parslow and Chris Smith in the pecking list to be a central defensive spot. Taft got let go by Leicester on May 9th, 2014 following his club’s promotion into the Premier League for 2014-15.

At the international level, Taft represented England at the under-18 age group once and scored his first goal against Poland on the 16th of November in 2010. Taft made his debut for the under-19 side against Germany on February 9th, 2011 and was awarded five cap at the level. He was selected as a player in the under-20 squad to play in the 2010 FIFA U-20 World Cup but didn’t make an appearance.
Taft was born to a family in Leicester, Leicestershire, Taft began his career with Leicester City as a player in their academy for youth. Taft signed his first professional deal with Leicester on March 17th, 2011 and was bound up to Leicester City until the end of June 2013. In order to gain experience in the first team, Taft was loaned out to Conference Premier club Kettering Town in August of 2011 and after seven games, he had the loan period extended by one month. Taft was back at Leicester in October of 2011 after completing the loan, playing 14 times for Kettering. His first time playing for Leicester’s Leicester premier team came as a inactive replacement for Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup third round tie that ended in a draw on January 7, 2012. In the replay, he was also an uninvolved substitute in the final match, Leicester were able to win 4-0.
A graduate of Leicester City’s youth academy, Taft failed to break into the first team and was loaned out to Kettering Town, Karlstad BK and York City. In 2014, he joined League Two club Burton Albion on a two-year contract. Taft was capped by England at under-18 and under-19 level, and was a member of the squad for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
