George Michael Shipley (born 7 March 1959 in Newcastle) is a famous English ex-professional footballer. He was a player for six clubs, but played most of his time playing for Lincoln City.

After a brief period of scouting for Maidstone United, he returned to Gillingham as the youth team’s manager in July 1991 , before swiftly moving to fill the same position at Middlesbrough. He was promoted in the summer of 1994 and took on the role of the assistant manager of Bradford City. Then, he became his Football in the Community Personnel Manager of Newcastle United.

Shipley was signed by Charlton Athletic in July 1985 and was a regular part of the team that finished second in Division 2 in 1985-86, thereby gaining advancement to Division 1. First Division. From 1986 to 1987, Shipley managed to hang the position he was in with the team, but struggled to stay out of being relegated. Then, he was a part of Gillingham for the following two seasons before returning with Lincoln City on a non-contract basis for a brief period in the latter half of 1989.

After a loan stint at Blackpool in October 1979 the player joined Lincoln City in January 1980 for a record club price of PS45,000. A hard-working midfielder, he was with Lincoln City for the next five years, making 274 appearances and scoring 52 goals. He was recently named number 24 among the most famous 100 league legends of Lincoln. In his final game for Lincoln he witnessed the worst of what happened when 56 spectators died in a terrible stand fire during a game against Bradford City.

Shipley was among the players spotted by Southampton’s scouting network within The North East and was brought to The Dell as a trainee in August 1975. After regular appearances with the reserves team, he was able to sign professional papers on the occasion of his 18th birthday on March 27, 1977. Through the following two seasons, he was a regular in the reserve squad and, following an unsuccessful loan period with Reading towards the end of the 1978-79 campaign, the player finally made his debut as a substitute for the First Division match at Crystal Palace on the 21st of August, 1979. He played in the following two games , but despite being his role as an “assist” for the winning goal in the home win against Liverpool the Saints, he did not play for the Saints for the rest of the season.
