Condo and Burroughs collaborated on numerous paintings and sculptures between 1988 and 1996. Selected works from their collaborations were exhibited in 1997 at Pat Hearn Gallery, New York. Condo and Burroughs also worked together on a collection of writings and etchings titled Ghost of Chance, which was published by the Whitney Museum in 1991.

The first public exhibits of his work were held at New York City at various East Village galleries from 1981 until 1983. In that time, he worked in the factory of Andy Warhol, mostly in the silkscreen production studio , where he applied Diamond dust on the Warhol’s Myths series. He was briefly relocated from Los Angeles and had his first solo show in 1983 at the Ulrike Kantor Gallery. Following his return back to New York later that year Condo made his first visit to Europe. Condo was then moved into Cologne, Germany, where he worked and met with several artists of The Mulheimer Freiheit group, including Walter Dahn and Jiri Georg Dokoupil. The first solo exhibition he had of his work in Europe occurred in 1984 at the Monika Spruth Gallery.

Condo was a student of music theory and art history during his time at his school, the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Through his childhood, he was a student of the guitar and music composition, while also exploring his love of drawing and painting. In the following two years, he attended UMass Lowell he moved to Boston where was employed in a silk screen workshop and then joined proto-synth/punk outfit The Girls as a bassist together with abstract painter Mark Dagley, avant-garde musician Daved Hild as well as Robin Amos, founding member of Cul de Sac. Their sole single “Jeffrey You”/ “Elephant Man,” You”/”Elephant Man” (1979) was recorded by David Thomas of Pere Ubu. Condo was introduced to Jean-Michel Basquiat for the first time in 1979 when Basquiat’s group Gray performed at his group the Girls at the nightclub in downtown Tier 3. Following this encounter, Condo relocated into Ludlow Street in New York City to pursue a profession as an artist. He was an original band member in the punk/blues duo Hi Sheriffs of Blue in 1980.

As he emerged from his time in the East Village art scene in the 1980s in the beginning, Condo coined the term Artificial Realism, “the realistic representation of that which is artificial” to refer to his fusion of the traditional European Old Master painting with an aesthetic influenced by American pop culture. Alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, Condo was instrumental in the global revival of painting that took place from the 1980s and onwards. Condo’s work was influential to artists of his generation as well as those who followed him which included Nigel Cooke, Sean Landers, John Currin, Lisa Yuskavage as well as Glenn Brown.

While still in Europe Condo met and began working with American art dealer Barbara Gladstone, and in 1984 he had a simultaneous two-gallery exhibition in New York at Pat Hearn and Barbara Gladstone Galleries. Already close friends with Basquiat by this time, Condo met Keith Haring on returning to New York, and the two remained lifelong friends until Haring’s death from AIDS in 1990. Several of Condo’s most significant works from this period, such as Dancing to Miles (1985), which was included in the 1987 Whitney Biennial and is now in the collection of the Broad Foundation in Los Angeles, were painted in Haring’s East Village studio.

Allen Ginsberg, a close friend and frequent visitor to Condo’s Paris studio, where he photographed the artist on several occasions, asked Condo to paint his portrait for the cover of his Selected Poems: 1947-1995, published in 1996 by HarperCollins.
