Captain First Class Gennady Petrovich Liachin (Russian: Gennadii Petrovich Liachin 1 January 1955 12 August, 2000) was the commander for Kursk, a Russian submarine Kursk at the time that the vessel was hit by an explosion and was sunk on the 12th of August, 2000.

Lyachin received promotion to Captain 1st Class in 1996 and was appointed the commanding officer of Voronezh’s sister ship, which was the unlucky K-141 Kursk, the very last Project 949A submarine to be completed, and had been launched just two years before. When the Kursk went down on the 12th of August the 12th of August, 2000 Lyachin was killed as did the remaining crew of 117.

In April 1991, he received the named the executive official of the nuclear submarine known as the Project 949A Antey class (NATO reporting name Oscar-II) K-119 Voronezh and was aboard until 1996. He and his newly-formed crew were in the area between September 1991 to March 1993, undergoing the training at Obninsk.

Lyachin was born in Sarpinsky in the Volgograd Oblast. He joined into the Navy in 1972.
