Gene E. Robinson is one of the most popular and richest Zoologist who was born on January 9, 1955 in Buffalo, New York, United States. Gene Ezia Robinson (born January 9 1955) is an American Entomologist, Director of the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology and a National Academy of Sciences member. He was the first to apply genomics in the study of social behavior, and was the leader of the quest to analyze the honey bee’s genome. On February 10, 2009, his research was famously featured in an episode of The Colbert Report whose eponymous host referred to the honey Dr. Robinson sent him as “pharmaceutical-grade hive jive”.

University Scholar and part of the Center of Advanced Study at the University of Illinois; Burroughs Wellcome Innovation Award in Functional Genomics; G. William Arends Professor of Integrative Biology and Certificate of Distinction given by the International Congress of Entomology; Founders Memorial Award from the Entomological Society of America; Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship; Guggenheim Fellowship; NIH Director’s Pioneer Award (2009); Fellow, Animal Behavior Society; Fellow, Entomological Society of America and Associate of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2004) and Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (2005) as well as of the National Academy of Medicine (2018). As of 2015, Robinson was awarded an honorary doctorate in the form of a doctoral degree from Hebrew University in Jerusalem for “his scientific leadership and groundbreaking contribution to the molecular basis of social behavior”. In the year 2018, Robinson received the Wolf Prize in Agriculture for his leadership in the revolution in genomics that has transformed the biology of population and organisms of the honey bee.

Robinson’s lab discovered the first gene known to be involved in regulating the bee colony’s famous division of labor, and in 2002 published this in Science. The very next year, Robinson’s lab was the first to show that social information causes mass changes in brain gene expression, also publishing this in Science.

Recently, Robinson was part of an investigation team that discovered the possible cause of Colony Collapsible Disorder, a condition that killed in 2007 and 2008 more than a third of honey bees that are commercially available throughout the U.S. In analyzing the variations in gene expression between healthy honey bees and those infected Researchers discovered that honey bees living in CCD colonies have abnormally high levels of fragmented ribosomal DNA which is a sign of infection by several viruses.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in biology at Cornell University, Robinson went on to get the Ph.D in entomology at Cornell at the age of 1986. Robinson joined Cornell’s faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1989. Presently, Robinson is the Director of the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois and a Swanlund and Center for Advanced Study Professor of Entomology and Affiliate Professor within the Neuroscience Program as well as the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology as well as the Program in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology as well as the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.

In October of 2006 a group of biologists headed by Robinson succeeded in publishing an entire sequence from the honey bee Apis mellifera, in conjunction with the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC). The discovery triggered an explosion of fresh bee research into genetics and molecular biology.

Robinson’s discovery on social regulation of brain gene expression has had a profound effect on understanding the roots of behavior. He developed a new paradigm to address the age-old “nature-nurture” problem, which was published in 2004 in an essay in Science and an Op-Ed in the New York Times.
