Gemma Mary Spofforth (born 17 November 1987) is an English former competitive swimmer who competed for Great Britain in the Olympics, FINA world championships and European championships. She also represented England during the Commonwealth Games. Spofforth is the world record holder and a previous world champion for the 100-meter backstroke. She has had a total of eight medals at international major championships.

In 2009, at the World Aquatic Championships in Rome where she was awarded victory in the 100-meter backstroke with a record-setting time that was 58.12 seconds. Spofforth broke the 100-meter Backstroke record of the world on her way to her first World title in Rome and her time of 58.12 beat the previous record-holder Anastasia Zuyeva time of 58.48 which she set in the semi-finals of the competition.

Spofforth was a participant in the in the 2008 Summer Olympics from Beijing, China, coming fourth in the 100-meter backstroke. She was four one-hundredths of an inch (0.04) ahead of silver medalist Margaret Hoelzer. Spofforth also placed ninth in the 200m backstroke.

Spofforth is a native of Shoreham-by-Sea, England. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis in 2005. She spent the next year out and back in the water , unsure of plans to keep swimming. It was a turning point in her life when she graduated from Portsmouth High School. The decision to go to university was based on her choice of whether or not she wanted to keep swimming.

Spofforth received an athletic scholarship for an athletic scholarship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where she competed for Coach Gregg Troy’s Florida Gators swimming and diving team in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and Southeastern Conference (SEC) competition between 2007 and the year 2010. In the four seasons she competed in American university swimming, she took home seven NCAA national championships, which included three medals in the 100-yard reversestroke (2008 2009, 2008, 2010) and three of the 200 yard backstroke (2007 2008, 2007, 2009) and one at the relay for 200-yards freestyle (2010) Spofforth was a major factor in her team’s Gators being awarded the NCAA national team championship in 2010. She earned eleven All-American honors as well as the honor of four All- Southeastern Conference (SEC) selections She was also twice SEC champ, and also set the record for two SEC records.

She was a member of Great Britain’s 2012 Olympic team, and competed in the 100-metre backstroke event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she achieved fifth place in 59.20 seconds. After the 2012 Olympics, Spofforth announced her retirement from competitive swimming.
