Gehan Dixon Mendis (born 24 April 1955) is an English former cricketer who played as the opening batsman of Sussex as well as Lancashire between 1974 between 1994 and 1993. He was a part of the Lancashire team which was the winners of both the Benson & Hedges Cup and the 1990 NatWest Trophy. Mendis has scored more than 21,000 runs during his first-class career.
Mendis was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) His family moved from Sri Lanka to United Kingdom when he was 12years old. As a result that he was able to be a player for Sri Lanka or England, however, he didn’t appear in international competitions for neither. Mendis attended Brighton, Hove and Sussex Grammar School and is now working as a teacher in Wilmslow, Cheshire as a teacher. Alex Mendis is his nephew. Alex Mendis has played for Sussex Second XI in the Second Eleven Championship between 2005 and 2006.
Mendis also played in an 1989 game in The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against Scotland at Glenpark.

When he was a child, Mendis played for as a player for the Sussex Young Cricketers, England Schools Cricket Association as well as the National Association of Young Cricketers teams. In 1974 Mendis was a player for Bede College when they won the British Colleges National Knockout Cup. Mendis made his debut as a first-class player for Sussex during a 1974 County Championship match against Worcestershire at the Central Recreation Ground, Hastings. Mendis had one run in the game. He scored one run in 1977. Mendis made up the Sussex team that fell against Ireland in Pagham; Mendis scored 42 in the opening innings of the game. Mendis recorded 1326 run during the season of 1980, which marked the first time he scored more than 1000 runs in a single season. In the course of the season, Mendis recorded the double hundred. Additionally to that, he was the highest scorer in the 80 Gillette Cup with 296 runs in four innings, including two centuries. In 1990, the Natwest Trophy semi-final was played over three days. Mendis batted all the way scoring 121 and eventually winning the Man of the Match award. The year 1993 was the first time Mendis got a grant year granted by Lancashire.
