Friels was announced as the player-manager for the club Dalry Thistle in March 2013.

Friels was absent from the field for a period of fourteen months as a result of an injury sustained in an encounter with Arthurlie during January 2009. He was being back in action in March 2010. The player signed with Cumnock Juniors at the beginning of February prior to signing for Kilbirnie Ladeside in 2012.

Friels began his career at Queen of the South but was not able to play in any league matches with the team. He played at Junior level with his hometown club Dalry Thistle before moving to Stranraer in December 1996. As part of Stranraer, the Galloway team, Friels won the Scottish Football League Second Division championship in 1997-1998 . The following season saw 19 appearances within the Scottish Football League First Division and scored a goal in a 7-1 defeat against Ayr United on September 28, 1998. Friels was released from Stranraer to join Junior club Auchinleck Talbot in the summer of 1999.

In the midst of scoring two goals in a game against Maryhill on the last day of the season, to in saving Talbot from being relegated in 2004, Friels moved on to Pollok in the following season. While playing for the ‘Lok’ club, Friels was capped for the Scotland Junior international team at the 2005 Quadrangular Tournament. Friels joined the Scottish Football League again for an unspecified time at Ayr United in the year 2006, but returned to the Juniors initially in loan with Glenafton Athletic in November 2006 and then on permanent loan at Auchinleck Talbot in February 2007 after being let go by Ayr. Friels was not able to settle in Talbot for the second time, and he joined Irvine Meadow in November 2007.
