Gary West (born 25 August 1964) is an English former footballer. He played in 250 games during the English Football League between 1982 and 1993. He played for a variety of clubs, the most notable being Sheffield United, Lincoln City and Gillingham.
His first Vale match was played at Bramall Lane, a goalless draw on the 28th of February, 1989. He played in 14 fixtures for the team during that season, and also playing in both the semi-finals and in the last game of play-offs. He suffered from cartilage problems and played only three matches for Vale the following season instead , he was loaned out to his old club Gillingham in November of 1990. He played only one league game for Gillingham’s “Gills” in his one-month loan. In January of 1991, the club was joined by another former player on loan, and spent for a month in Sincil Bank, where he played three times. In August of 1991, he joined Lincoln City permanently for PS25,000. He played 18 league games for City during the 1991-92 campaign and also played as a loan player at Walsall before he moved in to the non-league game playing for Boston United.
West was able to escape Lincoln’s fate of playing non-league football when he signed to Gillingham in Gillingham of the Third Division for a PS50,000 cost. He played the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons playing for Gillingham, also known as the “Gills”. The club was relegated in the second season. West was able to avoid the fate of relegation being transferred the club to Port Vale for PS70,000 in February 1989.

West started his professional career at Sheffield United, playing 75 league matches in Sheffield United’s “Blades” between 1982 and 1985. It was 1983-1984 that saw the team elevated out of into the Third Division in third place. They also consolidated the Second Division status the next season, but after this, West was able to secure a PS35,000 move into Lincoln City in August 1985.
The “Imps” suffered relegation into the Fourth Division in 1985-86. The team then resigned from the Football League in 1986-87, being a distant second just behind Torquay United thanks to their lower goal differential; West was named as the club’s Player of The season.
