Poole was born in Stratford, London. He played in the juniors with Tottenham Hotspur and was given an official contract, however he was not a part of the first team, and was let go after two years. He joined Fourth Division club Cambridge United but after just 18 months was transferred for $3000 to Conference club Barnet which was managed by Barry Fry. In his first season as a full-time player, Barnet were elevated by winning the title to Division Four, and reached the play-offs during 1991-92.

A year later, he teamed together with Fry again and this time with Birmingham City, newly relegated to the third division of English football, at the sum of PS50,000. The success continued in 1994-95, when the club won an appearance in the Second Division championship and victory in the Football League Trophy at Wembley. The following season Poole was appointed captain following the fact that Liam Daish was sold to Coventry City, captaining the team for the League Cup semi-final against Leeds United.
