Gary Lynagh, OAM (born on June 4, 1970) is an eleven-time Australian National Champion, three-time World Champion and Olympian lightweight rower. He was the representative of Australia at every major international regatta from 1990 until 1998.
He competed in the Queensland representative lightweight four, who competed in the Penrith Cup at the Interstate Regatta in 1995, 1992, and 1998. He also competed in the singles sculls singles championship for heavyweights and also known as the President’s Cup – representing Queensland in 1993 and 1994.
In the 1995 Australia Day Honours Lynagh was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for “service to rowing”.
The 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta saw lightweight events introduced to the Olympic regatta for the first time. Lynagh was selected with his longstanding sculling partner Simon Burgess in the lightweight coxless four along with Haimish Karrasch and David Belcher. They made the Olympic final and placed sixth.
In 1992, Stephen Hawkins was selected in the Olympic heavyweight double scull , and therefore the world champion lightweight quad was dismantled. In the lightweight World Championships Lynagh and Hick achieved success as a duo taking the light double scull title at the world championships . They did the same feat again at Racice 1993.

Lynagh’s senior rowing came from The Commercial Rowing Club in Brisbane. He started competing for the lightweight championships of the nation at the Australian Rowing Championships in 1988 representing Commercial. In 1989, he was part of the composite Queensland lightweight eight team that won the national title. In 1990, he was the winner of the two Australian national championships, the light double scull as well as the quad scull title. He was awarded an Australian championship quad that year, the single sculls title in the year 1992 as well as the double scull titles in 1993 and 1994, and the quad title in 1993, 1994 and in 1996. In 1996, a part of a composite Australian team, he was selected for the selection. Lynagh also took home an award for the lightweight national coxless team in the Australian Championships.
Lynagh was the first to be chosen for the team representing Australia in Lake Barrington 1990 in the lightweight Australian quad scull. Lynagh raced along with Bruce Hick and two Tasmanians who were Simon Burgess and Stephen Hawkins and won the bronze medal. The following year in Vienna 1991 , the same team took home gold as well as the World Championship title. They raced through the field, and took gold the title by 0.23 seconds.
By Indianapolis 1994 Lynagh and Hick were rowing in the lightweight coxless four with South Australians Andrew Stunnell and James Seppelt. They took the silver medal. Lynagh was back in the quad for Tampere 1995 – he stroked that crew to a sixth placing.
