He was a researcher in the 90s and collaborated with, among others Andrew Strominger and Joseph Polchinski explaining that string theory offers an explanation of the quantum microstates in black holes (following earlier work by Strominger as well as Cumrun Vafa ).
In 1985, Horowitz published a groundbreaking paper that he co-authored with Philip Candelas, Andrew Strominger and Edward Witten on the compactification of superstrings in Calabi-Yau space.
