Gary Barbaro is one of the most popular and richest American Football Player who was born on February 11, 1954 in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Gary Wayne Barbaro (born February 11th 1954) is an ex-free safety who played with the National Football League from 1976 to 1982 and one year with the United States Football League (USFL) in 1984. A third-round selection by the Kansas City Chiefs from Nicholls State University Barbaro recorded 39 interceptions in his career and was picked to take part in three Pro Bowls.

Barbaro was chosen to his team, the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the 1976 NFL Draft, becoming the first player in Nicholls State history ever to be chosen during the NFL Draft. In addition to replacing the previous starting Mike Sensibaugh, Barbaro was taught by defensive backs ‘ head coach Tom Bettis, who taught him to become more efficient free safety.

In November 1983, after sitting out the entire NFL season in a contract dispute, Barbaro signed a three-year contract with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. In his only USFL season (1984), he was named to The Sporting News USFL All-Star Team. Barbaro tore his ACL in his left knee earlier in the season and missed four games, came back to play in the Generals’ July 1984 USFL playoff loss to the Philadelphia Stars where he further injured the knee, ending his career.

Barbaro currently resides in Metarie, Louisiana where he works in the food service industry and is a uniform inspector in every New Orleans Saints home football game. On September 29, 2013, Barbaro became the 43rd member named to the Chiefs Hall of Fame by Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt.

The year 1976 was the one when Barbaro received a spot on the second team All- NFL rookie team . He also was awarded the Mack Lee Hill Award for the most promising player within the Chiefs organization. In 1977, Barbaro had eight interceptions and was the top player in the NFL in return yards for interception by 165. 102 of which he set during the December 1977 game in which he played the Seattle Seahawks. The day before, Barbaro took the pass of Jim Zorn in the end zone and returned it with 102 yards to score a touchdown which at the time, broke the NFL record. It is now the Chiefs single-game record-holder for the longest interception return. in 1979 Barbaro was able to intercept seven balls and was the first recipient from the Kansas City Chiefs Most Valuable Player award. In the year 1980, he was third in the NFL with interceptions, having ten in front of Lester Hayes’s 13. He was named to the second team of 1980 All-NFL from The Sporting News and second team All-Pro by the Associated Press. In 1981, Barbaro scored five interceptions and an average of 134 yards. He also was named first-team All-Pro from the Pro Football Writers Association.

Barbaro only played one year playing high school soccer during his time at East Jefferson High School in Metarie, Louisiana, instead spending his entire college years as a trombone player in the school’s marching band and jazz band. He was in 1971 when he received an invitation to play football in college in Nicholls State University, which was just adding football that year. He was originally a quarterback, Barbaro suffered from a stiff arm, and was switched to defensive back during the junior season. The team was made All-Conference during 1975. He was also instrumental in and helped Nicholls State to an 8-2 record, and was selected to participate for the Senior Bowl. He is a part of Nicholls State’s Athletic Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
