Gary Lee Andersen (born February 19th 1964) is an American football coach. He is in his second term as the head coach of football at Utah State University, a post he held from 2009 until 2012 before he was reinstated in the year the year 2019. Andersen was also the head coach of football at Southern Utah (2003), Wisconsin (2013-2014) as well as Oregon State (2015-2017). He was director of defense at Utah where he coached in the year 2008 Utes team which was undefeated and beat Alabama at the Sugar Bowl to finish the season second in the country.
Andersen started his career in football in Cottonwood High School where he was a football player during two seasons. After graduating from high school, he was a in the middle in Ricks College (now Brigham Young University-Idaho) located in Rexburg, Idaho, for two seasons. In his freshman year, he made first team All-Conference and Ricks was as fourth in the United States. In 1984 the year he was an First Team All-America selection and team captain when he led Ricks to the second position in the country. He moved onto Utah’s University of Utah in Salt Lake City and played two seasons in the Utes and completed his degree in 1986, earning an associate’s master’s degree in political science.
The 2014 regular season ended with the Badgers taking 1st place in the West division with a 10–2 record. Wisconsin played Ohio State for the conference title in the 2014 Big Ten Championship Game where the Badgers lost to Ohio State 59–0. Andersen left Wisconsin four days later, having taken the vacant head coaching position at Oregon State. Andersen cited family as his rationale for taking the Oregon State position while it was reported by some media outlets, such as Fox Sports and Sports Illustrated, that Andersen was frustrated with Wisconsin’s high admissions standards for athletes. Those reports turned out to be accurate, and were confirmed by Andersen in January 2015.
On December 9, 2018, Andersen was named head coach at Utah State for the second time, replacing the man who replaced him six years earlier in Matt Wells, who left for the Texas Tech head coaching job.
Andersen is the coach of Utah State for four seasons beginning with a record of 4-8 in 2009 and 2010. The first time he won with Utah State came in 2011 (7-6) and the fourth and final season was his most successful, since the 2012 Aggies were able to win 11 games, and lost just 2 (the two losses were both by two and three points to Wisconsin and BYU and BYU, respectively) They finished at the 16th spot on the last AP poll.

Andersen was back at his old school in 1997, after he was recruited from Ron McBride, his former offensive line coach at the Utes as the defensive tackles’ coach. Following McBride was dismissed in the role of head coach for Utah following the close of the 2002 season Andersen resigned to become the director of Southern Utah University. Andersen was only a time with the Thunderbirds before returning in Utah in 2004, when he was appointed as a replacement by Urban Meyer as the defensive line coach. He was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator as well as the defensive line coach between 2005 and 2008 and was a finalist in 2008 to win the Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation’s best basketball assistant coaches.
Andersen was named his new coach of Wisconsin (which defeated Utah State in an early season game in 2012) on the 21st of December 2012, to succeed Bret Bielema who had quit for Arkansas. When Andersen was able to decide to quit Utah State for the Wisconsin job, he phoned every player from Utah State individually to inform the players personally of his decision. In 2013, his first victory as coach of the Wisconsin head coach came in a victory of 45-0 over Massachusetts. Andersen’s 2013 record was 9-4.
