The 4th of April, 1979 TenNapel along with Falcons co-player Andy Spiva were involved in an accident in a car. It was raining in Atlanta the day before and Spiva’s car hit with the trunk of a tree. Spiva was killed, and TenNapel was severely injured. TenNapel was in a state of coma for longer than three weeks, and shed over 50 pounds since the incident. In August TenNapel had fully recovered to start working on the Falcons football camp, where he spoke of desires to play comeback to football. When he retired in the month of December, TenNapel made a public announcement of his departure and stated that, although improvement had occurred but his speed never recovered in his recovery.

TenNapel was chosen at the seventh round (198th in the overall) from the 1976 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions. He was fighting to make it onto the roster in the year he was selected. He returned a punt to score scoring and also returned an interception back to the opposing three-yard line in the preseason match against Baltimore. TenNapel was a part of 14 games with the Lions in 1976 , and then another fourteen games during 1977. He was transferred to the Falcons following the 1977 season.

Garth TenNapel (born March 27 1954) is an ex- American footballer. After playing linebacker at Texas A&M University, he was selected to the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL) in 1976. TenNapel was for the NFL between 1976 between 1976 and 1978. His career was ended following his 3rd NFL season, when he sustained serious injuries from an automobile accident.

The season began in 1974, Associated Press sportswriter Herschel Nissenson wrotein 1974 “Remember the name Garth TenNapel. It’s TenNapel, no space; not Ten Napel. Pretty soon it may be Garth Twenty-Tackle.” TenNapel was credited with 20 tackles at Texas A&M in a game against Clemson University and in a tense win against LSU the following week. He was named Lineman of week by Associated Press after the LSU game. He was named as an All-American linebacker in the year 1975. He was a part of the Liberty Bowl that year against USC. TenNapel was later admitted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame.
