In 1973 at the age 18 years old, Bushell was a member of his fellow members of the International Socialists and started writing for their weekly newspaper Socialist Worker. Bushell was also a writer in the magazines Temporary Hoarding, Rebel, and his own fanzine for punk called Napalm and was the editor of his own North East London Polytechnic Student Union magazine NEPAM. From 1978 to 1985 Bushell was a writer his articles for Sounds magazine, covering punk as well as other genres of street-level music including 2 Tone, the new style in British heavy metal, and the revival of the mod era. Bushell was in the forefront of reporting the Oi! subgenre, which is also called street punk or real punk. When the 1981 release of Strength Thru Oi! was made available, it was a source of controversy due to the fact that its name was a reference to a Nazi phrase “Strength Through Joy”, and the cover was adorned with Nicky Crane, a British Movement activist in prison for four years for violence against racial groups. Garry Bushell, who was responsible for putting together the album believes that the title was a reference to The Skids’ album Strength Through Joy and claims that the album was not aware of the Nazi significance. Bushell did not know the nature of the skinhead that was featured that graced the cover of the album until revealed in The Daily Mail two months later. In the same the year Bushell published the novel Dance Craze – the 2-Tone story. Then, in 1984 Bushell also composed his Iron Maiden biography Running Free.
Pink Tent evolved into 1977 punk group the Gonads and have declared themselves Oi! punk pathetique, punk or “Oi-Tone” because they play street and ska. The majority tracks are funny songs for parties, however they’ve also written serious music. Two of their songs with social commentary include “Dying for a Pint” (which refers to bouncers at nightclubs’ brutality) as well as “Jobs Not Jails” (a criticism on The Margaret Thatcher government’s policies).
Responding to comments made by Bushell in the 25 November 1993 issue of The Sun (“Liberal permissiveness is eating the fabric of our society. You want video nasties peddling stomach-churning filth? You got ’em. Western values? Who needs ’em!”), John Martin’s book Seduction of the Gullible: The Truth Behind the Video Nasty Scandal says: “[w]hen Bushell isn’t blustering about decency and Western values, he can be found gloating and cracking jokes in his column over such incidents as the death of several transvestites in a sex cinema fire.” Bushell robustly dismissed the criticism on Richard Bacon’s Five Live show (October 2010), accusing militant gay activists and liberal intellectuals of distorting his views.
