Gajan Pathmanathan is one of the most popular and richest Cricketer who was born on January 23, 1954 in Colombo, Western, Sri Lanka. Gajanand Pathmanathan (23 January 1954 – 29 August 2012) was an Sri Lankan first-class cricketer, playing throughout Sri Lankan cricket prior to the change to test status on the 29th of August in 1982. He was a student at the Universities in Oxford and Cambridge playing first-class cricket at both, and being among the few individuals to be awarded an honourary blue for both. He then was employed by the World Bank from 1984, until his death in 2012.
He was not able to complete his postgraduate degree at Cambridge because he was a head hunted to join the World Bank Group, joining in 1984 as a new professional. The first six years of his employment working for the bank included various assignments across Africa and Asia prior to focusing his efforts on India as well as Kenya between 1990 and 2002. In 2007, he was located at Washington, D.C. as the director for the South Asia Sustainable Development Unit. He passed away following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer August 2012 in Bethesda, Maryland. He is loved by his two daughters and wife. He was the nephew Devind Pathmanathan, and uncle, Satyendra Coomaraswamy, both played cricket in the first class.
Sri Lanka gained Test status in 1982, however the team did not decide to pursue the sport of cricket and Pathmanathan going back home to England at the end of 1982, to pursue studies for postgraduate degrees from Darwin College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge and playing one-day cricket with Cambridge University from 1983. appearing in seven matches and scoring 263 runs including two half-century. The time at Cambridge was also a time of his second time playing for the Combined Services, with Pathmanathan playing 2 List A appearances in the 1983 Benson & Hedges Cup. He was generally not a great player in one-day cricket, scoring just 74 runs over 12 innings with the highest score being 58. He is among the very few to get the blue of both Oxford as well as Cambridge.

Pathmanathan was born in Colombo in Sri Lanka, where he trained by the Royal College. The first time he played was at List A one-day cricket for the Sri Lanka Board President’s XI against the visiting Marylebone Cricket Club at Colombo in February 1973. The following month, he continued travelling to India together with his Sri Lanka national cricket team in the month following in which he made his first appearance in the first-class of cricket in the Kerala Chief Minister’s XI, which was played at Thiruvananthapuram along with Pathmanathan being a part of the team in the match against Tamil Nadu. The following year , he traveled to Pakistan together with Sri Lanka, making one List A and five first-class appearances.
After the departure of Royal College, he travelled to England to pursue a degree in agriculture and forest science in University College, Oxford. While at Oxford and playing in first class cricket at Oxford University between 1975 until 1978, appearing in 28 matches. Pathmanathan made 1,099 runs in the 28 games, with an average 22.42 and a maximum score of 82. It was one of the eight half centuries which he recorded for Oxford. Apart from playing in the first-class cricket of Oxford as well, he made 10 appearances with his Combined Universities cricket team in the Benson & Hedges Cup between 1975 and 1978. In his return back to Sri Lanka after graduating, Pathmanathan was a member of his country’s Sri Lanka Board President’s XI against the visiting West Indians in February 1979. He pursued Master’s degrees at the United States at Harvard University.
