Fredia Gibbs is one of the most popular and richest Boxer who was born on July 8, 1963 in Chester, Pennsylvania, United States. Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs (born on the 8th of July in 1963) was an American former professional kickboxer, martial artist as well as a boxer, who competed between 1975 until 2005. In her kickboxing profession she was the holder of ISKA, WKA, and WKF World Titles. Prior to her kickboxing journey she was a winner of the world title with Tae Kwon Do and was an All-American in track and basketball.
At the age of 17, Gibbs was able to start professional boxing. The record she had was 9-2-1 (2 KO). Her debut in boxing was on the 23rd of January, 1997 with an all-round win over Maria Fortaleza Recinos. Due to a faulty scheduling, Gibbs entered the title fight against Leah Mellinger during the time she was filming the film Knockout. The gruelling film schedule, coupled with the flight that took her to Los Angeles to Atlantic City, New Jersey, was not ideal and Gibbs was unable to win her first title fight. Gibbs claimed that losing to Mellinger motivated her to increase the training she was doing to begin her quest to reach the top.
Gibbs has also worked as an actress and a sports model for Sebastian International Sports Department. She has been featured in Black Achievers, Black Belt, Daily Press, Delco Times, Inside Karate, Jet, Los Angeles Sentinel, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Sports Illustrated for Women, and Upscale Magazine. In 2001, Gibbs the villain Tanya “Terminator” Tessario in the film Knockout. In 1996, she had a cameo in an episode of “The Fresh Prince of Bel- Air.”
In 2016 Gibbs was named one of the Top Ten Greatest African American Female Athletes of All time for Kickboxing.
Gibbs achieved Black History when she became the first African-American female kickboxing ISKA World Champion. She was awarded the title “The Most Dangerous Woman in the World” following an upset in during her bout with World Champion Valerie Wiet-Henin of France in the “Battle of the Masters” Pay Per View Event in San Jose, California. She then became one of the greatest fighters in history, and is a major historical figure in the light and superlightweight kickboxing. She competed between 1991 and 1997 and accumulated the winning record that included 16 victories, zero losses, and 15 knockouts as well as three world titles. She also was the top female woman in professional women’s boxing between 1997 and 2005 with an overall record of 9 victories, two losses and one draw. From 12 years old until in 1988 Gibbs played basketball from the age of 12 until 1988. She was recognized for the transformation of a team that was winless in Chester High School into a Division Champion district champion, a Division Champion, and a State Semi-Finalist, while also earning All-County, All State, and All-American awards. She scored 28 points, five rebounds, and 10 assists during the final year of her career. The year she was born, she was awarded dual basketball as well as track and field for track and basketball to Temple University. After playing at Temple for a single season, she was denied its scholarship due to academics , and pulled out.
In 1990, following her move into North Hollywood, California, Gibbs began kickboxing in Benny Urquidez’s The Jet Kickboxing Training Center under the direction by Rubin Urquidez and David Krapes. Then she began studying Muay Thai kickboxing under the guidance by Bangkok, Thailand Sur Puk and Saekson Janjira who were members of The Muay Thai Academy of America located in North Hollywood. On January 15, 1999, Gibbs handed Las Vegas hometown favorite Hannah Fox her first loss in a six-round unanimous decision, shown live on ESPN2. On November 16, 2001, Gibbs fought a highly anticipated WIBA world title fight against Sumya Anani, who had defeated former champion Christy Martin. Gibbs and Anani fought an exciting ten-round majority draw, which left the 140-lb WIBA World Title vacant. The Gibbs-Anani rematch occurred April 28, 2003, and Gibbs was unable to answer the bell for the second round with an injury to her right hand, yielding the victory to Anani. Disappointed in the outcome, Gibbs explained “I came in ready to win this fight, but Sumya is a strong fighter and I was not prepared to fight her with only my left hand.” Following the fight, Gibbs announced her retirement from boxing.
