Frederick Daniel Tyler (born March 15th 1954) is an American swimming and competitive coach. He has won numerous college and high school championships as well as an Olympic bronze medal from the freestyle 4×200-meter relay in the 1972 Summer Olympics and a published author.

Tyler together as John Kinsella, Mark Spitz and Gary Hall, Sr. was part of James Counsilman’s outstanding Indiana Hoosiers swim team at Indiana University, which dominated swimming in college for men during the 1970s early. Through his college days Tyler’s Indiana teams were Big Ten Conference champions for four consecutive years . They also were NCAA championships for 1971 and 1973. The year 1975 was the one in which Tyler became the NCAA individual winner in the 200-yard single Medley (time in 1:50,658) and his freestyle relay of 800 yards placed first in the NCAA finals in 1973, 1974, and 1975. Tyler finished his career as an Hoosier athlete as being among the most talented swimmers to ever compete in the team, receiving 14 all-time All- America awards. Freddie was admitted into the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame on the 28th of October 2016.

Tyler started coaching water polo and swimming during his time at West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida from 1980 until 1985. He was a coach in the athletics department at Mount Dora High School from 1986 to 1989. He was the head of the aquatics department for Lake Mary High School in Lake Mary, Florida since 1990. He led his team of Lake Mary Rams to a second-place finish in 2004 as well as fourth place in 2005 at the Florida state championships in swimming. Tyler’s water polo boys’ team made it to the state quarter finals and the girls’ team made it to the state semis in 2005 and the quarterfinals of 2007. In the 2004-2005 season, Fred Tyler was recognized as as the Seminole Athletic Conference and Florida State 3A Coach of Year. Tyler was the coach of gold medalist Brad Bridgewater (200-meter backstroke at 1996 Summer Games), who was a student at Lake Mary High School from 1987 until 1990. Tyler is a teacher of mathematics and social studies to students with exceptional education, as well as Algebra and Geometry to Regular education students.

Tyler started high school swimming career at St. Andrews School, located in Boca Raton, Florida, where, in 1969 and in 1970, he was the winner of the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual Medley (IM) during the State championships for high schools. Then he went to The Bolles School, a preparatory school located situated in Jacksonville, Florida, where swimmers competed with the Bolles high school swimming team. In the state championships of 1971 event, Tyler was the at the top of his class in both 200freestyle and 400-yard freestyle and later in 1972, he took the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual Medley. Tyler is among only seven swimmers to have won the Florida state championships in two separate events in three consecutive years. Tyler completed his studies at The Bolles School in 1972. Tyler became the very first swimmer to be awarded All American honors in every individual event. He was able to do this for three consecutive years.

Despite the terrorist attacks that targeted Israeli athletes Some of the most memorable events of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich included swimming where Mark Spitz won seven Olympic titles and seven records around the world. On the 29th of August in 1972 Tyler was 5th place in the the finals of the 200-meter freestyle and missed Indiana Teammate Mark Spitz’ world record time by 2.18 seconds. On August 31 in 1972 the American 4 200 meter freestyle relay consisting of John Kinsella, Fred Tyler, Steve Genter and Mark Spitz recorded the World & Olympic record at 7:35.78, beating the previous record set earlier by the USA team in the semifinal heat and also winning the Olympic gold medal. This feat was all the more amazing because Spitz took part as part of the relay 4×200 less than an hours after his World Record win in the 100-meter butterfly. Genter was discharged from the hospital just two days prior after surgery to repair the collapse of his lung.
