I’m looking forward to going back to work.” Costello defeated Bickford with a huge margin with five-in-ten of the votes.

In 2012, when states’ Congressional districts were revised during 2012, Costello decided to contest the newly created 6th District which ran across the eastern part across the entirety of Florida, which included Flagler County, southern Putnam County, St. Johns County along with northwestern Volusia County. Costello was up against an ex-prosecutor from the federal government Ron DeSantis, restaurant executive Craig Miller, St. Johns County School Board member Beverly Slough, Jacksonville City Councilman Richard Clark, William Billy Kogut as well as Alec Pueschel in the Republican primary. Costello was a proponent of “individual and ‘states rights'” and fought DeSantis who had criticized Costello in his mail ads and on television ads as an “tax and spend” liberal who approved in the legislature to grant undocumented immigrants state-wide tuition, to increase spending and an internet sales tax. Costello has firmly denied the accusations of DeSantis and stated, “While DeSantis continues to call me a career politician…he travels around campaigning and aligning himself with Washington insiders.” In the end, Costello placed second to DeSantis who would be victorious in the general election, securing 23 percent of the votes against DeSantis’s 39 percent.

When Rep. Ron DeSantis opted to run for Governor of Florida instead of re- election, Fred Costello entered the race for Congress in Florida’s 6th Congressional District. He launched his campaign with a series of rallies in Ormond Beach, Palm Coast, St. Johns County, Deltona, and Mount Dora. His opponents in the race initially included Michael G. Waltz, John P. Ward, and Jimmy Johns, all of whom live in Congressional District 4. Fred established a campaign theme: “Fred stands for US” emphasizing years of public elected and volunteer service as a local leader attending to the issues of his constituents in the community. The race will be decided in a Republican Primary on August 28, 2018.

In 2010 after an inability for State Rep. Pat Patterson to seek re-election, Costello ran to succeed his position for the District 26 which encompassed the southern portion of Flagler County and northern Volusia County that stretches across Ormond Beach up to Deltona. Costello was up against Nathan McDonnell and Vince Champion in the Republican primary, who were able to easily defeat, gaining 50% of the vote , while McDonnell’s 28 percent and Champion’s 23 percent. In his general campaign, Costello campaigned on “creating jobs for Floridians in renewable-energy research development and manufacturing,” and was challenged to Tim Huth, the Democratic candidate and former deputy superintendent of Volusia County Schools. Costello beat Huth easily to secure his first term as a legislator by securing 60 percent of the votes in comparison to Huth’s 40 percent.
