The film tells the story of a young man who is concerned for his son’s partner as he feels left out by the mother of his child. The film was awarded the Max-Ophuels Prize within the genre of “Best Movie” as well as the German Film Award for the most effective screenplay in 2000. In her other films for children and families, she focuses on the subject of family, which is usually depicted from children’s viewpoints the filming of literature such as the Erich Kastner film Emil and the Detectives (2001) and Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer (2002) (The class that fly) and her comic Unsere Mutter ist halt anders (2003) (Our Mother is just different) were released. After completing her studies in philosophy and German Philology in Stuttgart University as well as at Rome University Franziska Buch graduates with an M.A. In 1986, she transferred into the University of Television and Film Munich. Her first film was an ephemeral short-film Die Ordnung der Dinge (The order of things) in which she was awarded the European Short Film Award in Berlin 1987. A year later, Buch directed the 45-minute long feature-length film Tod eines Idioten (Death of a fool) which was produced in collaboration with Bavarian Television. Films she made for her graduation Die Ungewisse Lage of Paradieses (The uncertain condition of the paradise) is a film for children which follows a girl who escapes from reality and escaping into a fanciful dream world. The film premiered in theaters in 1993 and will be screened as her first feature film.
From 1991 onwards, Buch has worked as an author and director on a freelance basis. Between 1993 and 1994, Buch was a fellowship-holder at the Screenplay Workshop Munich. She wrote screenplays for the TV crime drama O.K. (1993/1994, Bavaria Film) and Faust (1994/1995, ZDF). Then she wrote an hour-long TV film about The life of and career of Else Lasker-Schueler. Mein Herz Niemandem (1994).
