Sentelle of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit before returning to private practice in 1989 to 1990. He served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina from 1990 to 2001. He was a private practitioner in Charlotte between 2001 and 2002. He was named the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina between 2002 and 2006.
