Lerda was manager of several teams in lower divisions. In June 2010, was appointed the manager at Torino F.C.
He was reinstated as Lecce head coach on 24 September 2013, after the dismissal of Francesco Moriero. He was sacked on 27 December 2014 and replaced by Dino Pagliari.
In June 2012 he became new manager of U.S. Lecce. On 21 January 2013 he was sacked following a 3–1 defeat against San Marino despite the team being in 2nd place in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione.
The next season, following two appearances for Brescia and then moving to Napoli and was unable to access the internet, before returned in Brescia during the 1995-1996 Serie B season. The following season, he spent a year and a half playing for Serie C1 side Atletico Catania but was just a hair short of Serie B promotion. He ended his career playing for Alessandria during Serie C2, Cuneo and Canavese and Cuneo with Canavese and Cuneo in Serie D, and finally as a player with Saluzzo as part of the Piedmont Eccellenza League, retiring after the 2003-2004 season.

Lerda began his professional career in the Torino youth team at 16 years old, becoming a member of the first team in the season 1985-1986. He made his debut as a professional in the club’s first game on 6 November 1985, stepping in for Junior during Torino’s 3-1 loss against Hajduk in the final stage of the round 16 in the UEFA Cup. The player made the Serie A debut on 24 November, when he scored the 4-1 win at home against Pisa in the absence of Schachner. The club stayed with him over two years, accumulating 19 appearances and scoring one goal. Then he was a player in the lower divisions of Messina, Taranto, Triestina (in Serie B), Chievo Verona (in the Serie C1), Cesena, and Brescia (in Serie B once again). He was instrumental in helping Brescia to gain Serie A promotion during the 1993-94 Serie B season, also winning the Anglo-Italian Cup with the club in 1994.
On the 19th November of 1986 Lerda began his first game for the Italy national team for under-21s during a 1-1 home draw with Switzerland. The first time he scored a goal was with the Italy under-21 team on the 11th of February 1987 in a 2-1 win away against Portugal The match was his only two games for the under-21 team.
On 9 March 2011 he was sacked by the Torino board and replaced by Giuseppe Papadopulo. However, eleven days later Papadopulo was sacked and Lerda was reinstated as manager. On 29 May 2011 he was once again sacked following the club’s failure to secure a spot in the Serie A-playoffs.
